I’m sure for generations that new parents have had the discussion about what to call the respective grandparents. Seems like grandpa and grandma’s names are governed by family traditions, like what you may have called your grampa, papa, grama, mama, nana or whatever. Many times it’s just your name preceded by the chosen endearment.
If you’re especially lucky your name is chosen by your grandchild. My oldest Daughter, Amy gave us our first grandson, Derek. He started calling me “Papa Jeep” and I’ve been called that by all my grandkids ever since. He is about sixteen now and we have six fantastic little miniatures of their parents. They all call us Papa Jeep and Grandma Lisa. It is music to our ears!
Not to get off the subject, but isn’t it funny that when you were raising your kids, things that irritated you then are now some of the most endearing things about their kids, our grandkids. One example that comes to mind is kicking the back of the car seat while I was driving. I ‘d yell “Stop that!! You want me to run off the road yelling at you!!” Now if , Derek, Francis, Dylan, Isaac, Ella, or Lola kicks the back of my car seat it’s so sweet, it remindes me so much of their parents when they were little.
But anyway, I wouldn’t trade the name “Papa Jeep” for anything I can think of right now, and besides “what would the kids call me”? I wouldn’t want to take the chance! I could end up just grandpa. Even Grandma Lisa calls me Papa Jeep.
So thank you Derek for seeing that name in me.
Love, Papa Jeep
